    Hi,

I’m using my friends computer cause my modem will not work! It is a USR about 5 years old, the lights light, the modem dials, but it will never connect.

    Any help will be appreciated

To Will, with the modem problem…

    Do this:

Try your modem on another computer (friend or family). If it works there the problem is probably your computer.

If it doesn’t work there it is probably not worth fixing as new modems can be purchased for under $30.

    Hey Folks,
I am building my first computer, and am swamped. I have an XFX 6600LE video card. It is a PCI Express slot type. I don’t understand the SLI tech. My question is::do you have to put a second card in the short slot just to use the XFX PCIe card? Will the 6600LE work by itself? TigerDirect says you can, but I’m having problems. If I di have to use a second card, what is it’s designation, or what is it called?

I built a computer for my parents. Everything works great, but when they go to turn it off it reboots to turn back on. Just like it would had you been turning it on in the first place. How do I fix this for them?

  5. Tom says:

They may be selecting restart after they choose shutdown!

I recently bought a new 160GB Western Digital HD to reinstall XP on.
When I first put my XP Install CD in, it looked as if everything was about to install fine, but before the install process, it turned out that I didn’t have the power connection to the HD.
When I connected the power and restarted the PC, the only message I could get was Boot Disk Failure…….
I couldn’t escape from that message and it wouldn’t give me the option to press a button to restart or continue.
I then tried to see if I could cheat the PC into installing by connecting the HD power just as the “loading files” process was beginning. But then it showed a message saying that the CD may be damaged (but it’s in perfectly fine condition).
When I restart the computer without the install CD in the CD drive, it does the same Boot Disk Failure…..(can’t escape from the message) and it doesn’t let me enter the BIOS either.
I would think that there may be something with the whole PC because it was damaged a while back. But really, everything seems to be working fine.

Also, I don’t see the light to the FD flash on in the POST, because I’d like to use a Win98 Boot Disk (just because I can).
And I’m thinking because of this, it’s called the CD Drive the A: Drive, but that’s supposed to be the FD, isn’t it?
Anyway, as I’ve already said, it won’t let me get into the BIOS to change drive letters.

Anyway, I’m wondering if it’s because it needs a different brand, because it’s previous HD was a Seagate. Or maybe because the power/data cables need to be set out in a Master/Slave way.

    Any ideas?

    Darren

Ok, so i bought a new computer a couple of weeks ago and it was working fine. Then all of the sudden yesterday the os wouldn’t load. it gave me the options of starting in safe mode or normal or the last good configuration. i tried all of them and the only one that would load is the safe mode. i tried restoring the system and it wouldn’t work. i believe this error message occured due to a power shortage or something. do you have any suggestions for me?

, Could be a lot of things. The computer is under warranty, so you may want to let the manufacturer help you.
